Lab Reports guide
The standard lab report structure
Most lab reports follow IMRaD: introduction, methods, results and discussion, plus an abstract and references. Writers follow your lab manual if it specifies a different structure.
Methods are written in past tense and passive voice where your course expects it.
Results, tables and graphs
Writers present your data in clearly labelled tables and graphs, with units, error bars and figure captions, created in Excel or the software you prefer.
Calculations are shown so your instructor can follow them.
A discussion that explains your results
The discussion is where most marks are earned. Writers compare your results with expected values, explain sources of error, and connect findings to the underlying theory.
They also suggest realistic improvements to the experiment.
What to send your writer
Include your raw data, the procedure or lab manual, any pre-lab questions and the marking guide. Lab reports are written from your own data so they reflect the experiment you actually performed.
