For this week's activity you will use three materials: an article, a chart, and map about the Columbian Exchange (They are available in Week 3 page).

Read carefully the article, and then look at the visual materials (the chart and the map).

The discovery of the New World opened the path for the continuous and increasing exchange of people, animals, plants, and also pathogens, between the New and the Old World. There were positive and negative effects to this exchange. New flora and fauna impacted the local specie in both sides of the Atlantic. Old World pathogens caused great mortality among Amerindian people, killing almost 90% of them.

During this week, take time during a meal, a visit to the grocery store, or any other quotidian event, to identify one product, original from the New World, that has become popular in the entire globe. For instance, chocolate (xocolatl) is original from Meso-America. The Aztecs consumed it in a hot spicy beverage and offered cacao seeds to their god Quetzalcoatl. Nowadays, the various version of chocolate (white, milk, dark, etc) are so popular around the world, and we use cacao in various cooking recipes.
