Project description

Discussion Question #1 for Moliere's Tartuffe (1669, Act 1 and 2, )

Why does Madam Pernelle highly think of Tartuffe and why do Damis and Dorine dislike him? Why does Madam Pernelle think that the family members [Elmire, Damis, Mariane] are committing "sins" and are morally flawed (1.1.77, )? What does Orgon think of Tartuffe and why did he take Tartuffe to his house? Does Tartuffe "practice precisely what he preaches" (Act 1. scene 1. line 42, )?

Discussion Question #2 for Moliere's Tartuffe (1669, Act 1 and 2, )

What does Tartuffe do in Orgon's house? Who is Cleante and what does he think of Tartuffe? Cleante tells Orgon: "Those calculating souls who offer prayers/ Not to their Maker, but as public wares, /And seek to buy respect and reputation/ With lifted eyes and sighs of exaltation" (1.5. 107-110, ). What does Cleante criticize by saying this to Orgon? Why does Orgon fail to see Tartuffe's hypocrisy? (at least 100 words for Question #2)

Discussion Question #3 for Moliere's Tartuffe (1669, Act 1 and 2, pp. 20-42)

Why does Damis think Tartuffe is against Mariane's marriage to Valere? (See Act1, scene 3, line 8, ). If so, are there any motives behind Tartuffe's meddling in Mariane's wedding? Why does Orgon want Tartuffe to be Mariane's husband? Orgon tells Mariane, "And he's to be your husband, is that clear? It's a father's privilege..." (2.1. 29-30, ). What do you make of Orgon's decision to marry off his daughter to Tartuffe? Dorine, who is a maid to Mariane, has no hesitation in giving her opinion about Tartuffe, and she questions Orgon's view of Tartuffe. How would you describe the character, Dorine?

Instructions for posting your answers to Discussion Questions are as follows:

Please provide your in-depth interpretation and analysis on the questions (at least 100 words per Discussion question #1, #2, and #3). Please try to include textual evidence (direct quotes along with the Act and Scene #) in your answer.

When you need to summarize the plot, please do not copy words/sentences from the text. You should briefly summarize/paraphrase the plot in your own words.

After posting your answers to discussion questions, please read other classmates' posts and add your comments and your thoughts.

I will grade each answer based on the extent to which you address each question with a detailed and insightful analysis. Please note that answering a question without any meaningful interpretation and copying sentences from the text will get a zero point.
