Discussion Question #1 for Aidoo's Changes (1991, pp. 137-166)
After a year of her marriage to Ali, Esi began to wonder about "the kind of marriage she was involved in" (139) and had "the delay in her awakening" (139). What is her delayed awakening about? Why does Esi explode around the end of their third year of marriage telling Ali that "I can't go on like this. . . This is no marriage" (158)? Why is she dissatisfied with Ali? Why is Ali puzzled by her statement?
Discussion Question #2 for Aidoo's Changes (pp. 137-166)
What do you make of Aidoo's depiction of Esi (not Kubi) giving her old car to Opokuya? What is the significance of her action here? What does having her own car mean to Opokuya? Later when Kubi comes to Esi's place to pick up Opokuya, he sees Esi crying, holds her close, and makes a sexual advance to Esi. Then, Esi thinks of Opokuya and remembers her grandmother's advice ("remember that a man always gains in stature any way he chooses to associate with a woman--including adultery. . . But, in her association with a man, a woman is always in danger of being diminished", 109, 164). What does Esi realize at this moment? Why do you think Aidoo created a scene of Kubi's sexual attempt on Esi, and how does this affect Esi's decision regarding her marriage to Ali?
Discussion Question #3 for Aidoo's Changes (pp. 137-166)
Despite Es's relationship with Ali "stopped being a marriage" (164), she decides to stay in the marriage, while "radically changed" (165). What is the significance of the radical change Esi makes in their marriage arrangement? Does she exercise autonomy in her unhappy polygamous marriage with Ali, or does she find herself trapped? Does Esi make a realistic decision, or does she have no other viable alternatives? What do you think Aidoo is trying to convey through Esi's awakening and dilemma in the novel? What does Aidoo try to convey through the title, Changes?
