Module 12 Mind, Body, Spirit, Context
This exercise is based on the use and understanding of
Figure 2 (page 215) in the Hodge, Limb & Cross (2009) article Links to an external site.. If you need to, read the article before you begin this exercise.
Read all the directions that follow before you attempt the exercise or respond to this discussion board.
Directions: Draw a circle large enough to write in and put a cross in it, like Figure 2; the circle must be large enough to write inside, but it's fine if you go over the lines, you'll just need to write well enough to read it later. Label each quadrant of the circle like Figure 2; you should have an area for mind, body, spirit, and context. Instead of putting in the prompts that define each area, write in two sentences about what is going well for you in each area (as defined by that quadrant). For example, if you were working in the "body" area you might write something like, "I'm getting enough sleep" or "I'm getting a good amount of exercise each week"; after listing two things that are going well, you should list one thing they'd like to improve in that quadrant; for example: "I wish I could eat more vegetables and less junk food" or "I want to do a five-minute meditation each day to improve my anxiety" (note that you stay in each quadrant noting two things that are going well and one thing you would like to improve). After writing two positive things in each quadrant and one goal or aspirational thing in each, you have an opportunity to pick one goal or aspiration to work on. Include a picture of your circle with your reply to this assignment.
After picking your goal, you should discuss how you think that working on that goal will impact or radiate out into the other related quadrants/areas. This discussion can happen with a friend, a family member, or a roommate; it's just important to discuss your goal and how you think it will make changes in the mind, body, spirit, and context areas (please keep in mind how Hodge, Limb & Cross define these areas. For this discussion board, write about this experience 1) write about the process of creating this circle for mind, body, spirit, and context; 2) Describe the goal you decided to work on; 3) describe the ways that working on this goal will impact or radiate out to the other areas of mind, body, spirit, and context.
It's important to note while there are three ways that we should work on ourselves (Spirit, Body, and Mind) there is only one quadrant in which we think about our relationship with others (Context). That area is where we think about others, our relationship with them, and where we receive help, love, storytelling, dance, music, and other traditions that help us to understand who we are within the context of our communities. Ultimately when we do the work within ourselves, mind, body, spirit, and context we are better able to respect/cherish/receive our relationships with others. Before you submit your results to this discussion board you will need to follow all the directions and think about what you'd like to discuss here.
