From this week through Week 5, you will submit an original piece of writing each week for faculty feedback. The due date for these weekly writing workshop assignments is Day 2. The reason for the early deadline is so that I can provide feedback in time for you to revise and submit to your other class if the document is associated with another class.
NOTE: PLEASE select an actual essay you are working on and NOT things like worksheets, Q & A forms, etc. I want to look at your academic writing in essay/paragraph form so please submit accordingly.
I will keep your feedback preferences in mind while I read through and comment on your workshop submissions. I want to make sure you are getting what you need from my instruction!
A Note About Writing Feedback[
This week you begin submitting your Writer’s Workshop Assignments. These consist of 1-page excerpts of writing you are currently working on for another course, or past submissions to a course. Please note the following:
When I provide feedback, I will focus on the writing elements such as grammar, APA, sentence structure, clarity, voice, organization, and flow. I will not address the content—for example, whether you are defining a concept correctly or demonstrating mastery of the subject matter. Your program faculty are experts in your discipline, and so their feedback will cover those areas. Any questions about the content should be directed to them.
I will not comment on every writing concern in your submission; instead, I will focus on several key issues and build my feedback from week to week, eventually addressing more advanced writing skills. Because of this, my writing feedback on any given paper may not always align with your program faculty’s feedback.
Incorporating my feedback does not necessarily mean that you will receive a high grade when you submit the paper to your other course.
If you have not received much writing feedback in the past, you may be surprised to see comments on your Writer’s Workshop submissions. Even the strongest writers can benefit from feedback, so know thatI will comment on everyone’s work regardless of ability. If you are an experienced writer, the comments you receive may simply be more advanced and nuanced. I’m here to support your continued growth as a scholarly writer.
Reading to Form an Argument
This week you critically read a journal article with the goal of forming an argument based on it. As you read, take notes
Links to an external site.on what stands out to you. What seem to be the most important points? What are the implications of what the authors wrote? Are you persuaded in some way by the information? How might you react to the reading as a scholar?
Peer Feedback
An option in discussion this week and in the rest of the course is giving writing feedback to peers. In your response, you take on the role of a reader who is understanding and interpreting your colleague’s message. Is that message clear? What is strong about the writing? What could be better? With peer feedback, it’s important to move beyond “great job” and into constructive comments that help your colleagues grow. Those constructive comments should come from a place of honesty and respect. For more tips, see How to Give Useful Peer Feedback
