Project description

When children reach adolescence, they struggle with identity and become confused about their roles. Being industrious or becoming inferior is another concern that children struggle with. They want to become industrious, which reflects their struggle with social and academic demands. Children who successfully resolve this conflict will likely be competent and diligent (Maree, 2022). Children try performing different roles at this point, and they have ideas that give them a personal identity. When these children fail to form a clear identity, they become confused. The next stage leads to the child developing intimate relations when these young adults connect with peers. Failure to make the connections, the young adult becomes isolated.

When the person becomes an adult, the person can either become generative or stagnate. These adults need to nurture things that live beyond them, like having an impact on society or parenting. If they fail, they become stagnated (Maree, 2022). A person who can resolve this conflict has a sense of usefulness and accomplishment. The theory explains that the last stage is a reflection stage where older adults develop feelings of fulfillment, leading to a feeling of integrity or regret. Effective resolution leads to wisdom and completeness.

Maree (2022) analyzes the theory, establishing that the author's biological context influenced its development. It explains that Erikson’s struggle with identity informed his identity struggle as an adolescent. The holistic approach developed by Erickson, which integrates psychosocial, biological, and social factors, addresses an individual's lifespan, making it essential for understanding human development. The study also proves the significance of the theory in understanding different theories in education and counseling. The theory focuses on identity and social factors that have helped improve early childhood education, life design, and career counseling.
