As a forensic professional, whether a psychologist, psychiatrist or another mental health expert working within legal contexts, you are bound by strict ethical guidelines and professional codes of conduct. These are set forth by bodies such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology. However, situations often arise where these standards may clash with one’s personal values or moral compass. When those situations arise, a forensic professional should avoid starting or continuing professional work if they know personal problems may impair their competence (American Psychological Association, 2011). The American Psychological Association states that if such issues arise, you must take appropriate steps, like seeking consultation or support and deciding whether to limit, suspend, or end your professional duties (2011). Some of the most common challenges can sometimes be found in objectivity and impartiality, confidentiality, informed consent, competence, conflict of interest, and truthfulness in reporting. Coming from a law enforcement background, these can also be a challenge at times. As a newcomer to the field, Martinez highlights a key advantage in recognizing and managing bias early in one’s career. By developing self-awareness and ethical decision-making habits from the outset, emerging professionals are better positioned to uphold ethical standards (2014).
