The purpose statement describes how a study, theory, or phenomenon will address a research problem (Burkholder et al., 2020). It is a clear and concise statement to define the overall objective of the research. In Stedman-Smith et al.’s (2015) article, although the purpose statement identifies the intent behind the study – to determine if a modified model of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) provides a better understanding of hand hygiene practices and is a predictor of hand hygiene behavior – it does not clearly articulate the research method. The reader can deduce from the article that the researchers (Stedman-Smith et al., 2015) used a quantitative research approach because they used a survey to collect statistical data from the participants. McLeod (2025) defines quantitative data as measurable numerical data that is generally used to test hypotheses, uses large sample sizes, addresses “how much/many”, and uses surveys to make predictions.
