Before I assess an explanation of a threat to internal validity and external validity in quantitative research I will define internal and external validity. Internal validity is defined as validity that: “examines whether the study design, conduct, and analysis answer the research questions without bias” (Andrade, 2018). External validity is defined as validity that: “examines whether the study findings can be generalized to other contexts” (Andrade, 2018).
Now I will address a threat to internal and external validity in quantitative research: ambiguous temporal precedence. The concept or design of this type of threat is that there is an inability to find correlation between variables, leading to inconclusive results. This type of threat to internal validity is a threat to external validity. In other words a threat to internal validity causes a threat to external validity, one causes the other.
