I believe that we will not find the best answer to who should be eligible for the death penalty. Indeed, I believe that there is not correct answer. This topic has long stirred ethical, legal, and psychological debate. While the current minimum age for capital punishment in the United States is 18, this standard does not align with current research in neuroscience and developmental psychology. There is enough evidence to demonstrate that the human brain, particularly the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for executive functions such as judgment, impulse control, and decision-making continues to develop well into a person’s mid-twenties (Cohen et al., 2016). Therefore, I believe that the death penalty should only be applied to individuals aged 25 and older. It had been proven that those younger than 25 lack the full cognitive maturity to be held to the same moral and legal standards as fully developed adults.
