Probability sampling is the most effective method for selecting research participants when a researcher has specific goals to meet. One such goal may be to apply research findings to a more generalized population (Onwuegbuzie & Collins, 2007). To achieve generalizability, a larger sample size is needed, which probability sampling is more likely to attain (Teddlie & Yu, 2007). Because there is a larger sample size, each member of the population is equally likely to be selected, thus allowing different subgroups to be represented in the sample. This sampling method is utilized by Davis et al. (2015) in their study of cold case policies and practices of various law enforcement agencies across the United States. Through stratified sampling, the authors were able to reduce the sample to a fraction of the population’s size while still maintaining a good representation of different law enforcement agencies by region, size, and tribal police departments.
