The last scene of the “Death in the Family,” podcast ended gruesomely with Scott Moyer doing the unthinkable- killing his entire family and then himself (Walden University, 2016). Familial homicide has yielded increased attention lately, as researchers learn more about the many aspects of intimate partner violence. Scott Moyer, like most perpetrators of IPV, exhibited several alarming behaviors that signaled his risk of escalation.
Having a history of violence and intimidation made Scott more likely to commit familicide (Boyd et al., 2022). Scott presented with a short temper, fueled an alcoholic rage, which combined, increased his motivation to kill (Walden University, 2016). His substance use was another indicator of familicide. Scott spent some time at the bar heavily drinking before interacting with Andrea. Scott also presented personality characteristics that indicate his sense of entitlement (Boyd et al., 2022). For instance, when he arrived home following the fight, he had the audacity to demand breakfast. His coercive control would have continued to increase if Andrea allowed it. Losing his job and the risk of losing his home due to poor financial decisions was another risk. Response with references
