This discussion focuses on the application of systems theory and action research to address issues currently being faced by Apple. Broadly, systems theory regards the interrelation between parts of a system or, as in this case, an organization. Systems theory posits that how the parts of an organization interact with one another and with the environment impacts the outcomes produced by the organization (Anderson & Zaballero, 2015). Similar to systems theory, action research can be regarded as a theory, but it can also, with a more applicable viewpoint, be regarded as a process (Anderson & Zaballero, 2015). Action research espouses the principles of pragmatism, democracy, epistemology, a value-orientation, and development to guide an organization and the personnel therewithin through a cyclical problem-solving process (Anderson & Zaballero, 2015). Apple, a technology company, has more recently had issues with slowed innovation and sales, keeping up with artificial intelligence, and personnel turnover (Gallagher, 2025; NeoMam Studios, 2023). For the purposes of simplicity, this discussion will focus on personnel turnover, as the retention of personnel likely reflects retention of knowledgeable individuals with the company, its products, and problems, and a more positive and innovative work environment.
