Explain which environmental factors influenced Eric’s criminal behavior. Support your explanations with at least two examples from the literature you reviewed.
Respond to at least one of your colleagues, who was assigned to the set of factors you were not, by explaining why you agree or disagree with one or more of the factors they identified.
Note: Your responses to colleagues should be substantial (250 words minimum), supported with scholarly evidence from your research and/or the Learning Resources, and properly cited using APA Style. Personal anecdotes are acceptable as part of a meaningful response but cannot stand alone as a response. Your responses should enrich the initial post by supporting and/or adding a fresh viewpoint and be constructive, enhancing the learning experience for all students.
Environmental Factors Influencing Eric Smith’s Criminal Behavior
There were several environmental factors that played a major role in shaping Erics’ emotional state and inevitably contributed to his violent behavior. His social experiences, family environment, and societal influences offer insights into how his behavior developed over time. Environmental stressors have a massive effect on a child’s coping abilities and emotional responses, especially when these stressors go unnoticed and unaddressed (Konopka et al., 2018)
Peer Rejection and Chronic Bullying
Eric was a victim of chronic bullying, which in turn was one of the most significant environmental stressors leading to the murder. Eric was picked on due to his red hair, freckles, and thick glasses, and this bullying lasted for years (Egan, 2022). Konopka et al. (2018) suggests that peer rejection can lead to frustration, anger, and difficulty regulating emotions. Tilley (2013) also notes that repeated and frequent exposure to harmful social situations can significantly increase the likelihood of aggression, especially in those that cannot effectively navigate these negative emotions, such as children.
Being repeatedly dominated and belittled by others creates a deep sense of powerlessness. This powerlessness can eventually turn into aggression, especially toward someone they see as smaller or more vulnerable than themselves. For Eric, the younger victim gave him a sense of control, something he lacked in his own peer interactions (Egan, 2022).
