Organization that is Experiencing Ethical Issues
Kroger Co., a national grocery chain store, is currently facing ethical issues regarding the opioid crisis. Specifically, over the past few years, Kroger has been the subject of lawsuits alleging the company contributed to the opioid crisis by not having monitoring apparatuses in place for opioid prescriptions and providing access to a dangerous amount of opioid prescriptions (Angel, 2025). In 2023, Kroger settled with 30 states for $1.2 billion, and in February 2024, Kroger settled with Kentucky for $110 million (Angel, 2025). Issues regarding lawsuits are not over yet, as Kroger is currently being sued by Missouri (Brownfield, 2025).
Impact of Ethical Issues
The ethical issues faced by Kroger regarding the opioid crisis are various. Most apparent, public perception of the company is at stake. While Kroger is certainly not the only company or entity that has been involved in the fallout of the opioid crisis, the publicity has likely negatively affected its public image. The ethical conundrum here is accounting for any wrongdoing and making it right. Following the settlements, Kroger has maintained that it has not admitted to any wrongdoing, and, so far, each lawsuit has resulted in a settlement (Angel, 2025).
The alleged contribution to the opioid crisis also entails a moral component. Morally, elements that perpetuated the opioid crisis should have been held accountable to stem misuse, death, and costs. The opioid crisis, between approximately 1999 to 2023 (or present, depending on how it is perceived), entailed hundreds of thousands of deaths impacting even more family members and other loved ones and cost billions of dollars in medical expenses for families and the government.
