An organization development (OD) practitioner plays a key role during the entry phase by establishing trust, credibility, and a clear working relationship with organizational stakeholders. Entry involves learning the organization’s history, values, norms, and informal practices that define its culture. Respecting the existing culture is essential because it shapes employee behavior and attitudes toward change. By approaching the organization as a collaborative partner rather than an external authority, the OD practitioner demonstrates respect for existing strengths while gaining insight into how the culture supports or constrains organizational effectiveness (Bartlett & Francis-Smythe, 2016).
While honoring the current culture, the OD practitioner is also responsible for recommending improvements and enhancements that align with organizational goals. This requires a balanced approach that integrates cultural awareness with evidence-based analysis. Using systematic diagnostic tools such as interviews, surveys, and performance data allows the practitioner to identify gaps and opportunities objectively. Framing recommendations as incremental improvements that build on existing capabilities, rather than as radical departures, increases stakeholder acceptance and supports sustainable change (Panmore Institute, n.d.).
