Project description

In preparation for the simulation, I approached the scenario with a deliberate focus on systems thinking and ethical OD practice. I reviewed the organizational context of MarCom Technologies, Inc., the roles and backgrounds of the marketing leaders, and the presenting issues of conflict, low morale, and perceived underperformance. Drawing on OD principles, I prepared a structured facilitation plan that emphasized rapport building, psychological safety, Socratic questioning, and the avoidance of premature problem-solving (McLean, 2015; Schein, 2016). I also intentionally planned to introduce a 360-degree assessment as a diagnostic tool to gather multi-perspective data and reduce reliance on assumptions or single-source interpretations (London & Smither, 1995).

During the simulation, one of my strengths was establishing my role as an external OD consultant and maintaining a neutral, nonjudgmental stance. I clearly communicated the session's purpose, set expectations for a structured discussion, and attempted to manage the process rather than the content of the conversation. I used reflective listening to surface differing perspectives among participants and reframed emotionally charged statements, such as claims of low motivation or underperformance, into system-level patterns related to leadership dynamics, communication, and role clarity. This approach aligns with best practices in OD, which emphasize diagnosing organizational conditions rather than attributing problems to individual deficiencies (McLean, 2015).

At the same time, the simulation revealed areas for growth in my consulting practice. Managing heightened emotion, competing viewpoints, and interruptions in real time proved challenging, and at moments the conversation felt reactive rather than fully productive. Although I attempted redirection, I recognize that I could have used more frequent and explicit synthesis statements to slow the pace and reinforce shared understanding. Additionally, while I successfully introduced the rationale for a 360-degree assessment, I could have articulated the implementation timeline and next steps more clearly and succinctly to strengthen participant buy-in. These challenges highlighted the importance of pacing, repetition, and clarity when facilitating emotionally charged group discussions (Schein, 2016).

Reflecting on the experience, I recognize that the tension and resistance encountered during the simulation were not indicators of failure, but rather valuable diagnostic data. The emotional intensity, talking over one another, and divergent interpretations of the problem suggested that the group was not yet ready for collective problem-solving. This reinforced the appropriateness of recommending individual data collection through a 360-degree assessment before broader interventions. Research supports the use of multi-source feedback to increase self-awareness, surface discrepancies between intent and impact, and inform development-oriented change initiatives when implemented ethically and confidentially (London & Smither, 1995).

Overall, this simulation strengthened my understanding of the OD consultant's role as a facilitator of insight rather than a provider of immediate solutions. It reinforced the importance of maintaining authority over process, reframing blame-based narratives into system-level diagnoses, and using evidence-based tools to support sustainable change. The experience highlighted both my developing strengths in structured facilitation and areas for continued growth, particularly in managing emotional dynamics and pacing complex conversations. As a result, this simulation served as a meaningful opportunity to integrate OD theory with applied consulting practice and to refine my professional approach moving forward.
