I was unable to fully participate in the live simulation due to unexpected technical difficulties with my camera, which resulted in my removal from my assigned time slot. I carefully reviewed the consulting simulation example provided in the course (Walden University, 2019). This reflection is therefore based on the example simulation, my intended approach to the consultant role, and the OD consulting concepts discussed by Vosoughi (2014). The simulation example reinforced the importance of the consultant’s role as a collaborative “co-pilot” who guides the process while allowing the client to retain ownership of both the problem and the solution. Based on this, I believe one of my stronger skills would be building rapport and facilitating collaborative dialogue by listening carefully, asking clarifying questions, and helping stakeholders feel heard—an approach that aligns with Schein’s process consultation and the partnership model described by Vosoughi (2014).
At the same time, observing the simulation made it clear that I still need to strengthen and refine several skills. In particular, I need to continue developing my ability to shift roles fluidly depending on the client’s needs, knowing when to facilitate, when to gently challenge, and when to step back and allow the group to work through tension. I also want to improve my confidence in managing resistance and emotionally charged interactions in real time, especially in group settings. As Vosoughi (2014) notes, these skills are refined through experience, and watching the simulation highlighted how nuanced and demanding the consultant role can be.
Even though I was unable to participate directly, this experience reinforced that effective OD consulting is not simply about applying tools or frameworks, but about building partnerships, facilitating insight, and helping clients take ownership of both the problem and the solution. It also clarified the specific interpersonal and process skills I need to continue developing as I move forward in the program.
