Consulting and coaching can both be utilized in organizational development to create change; however, there are differences between the two practices. A consultant’s primary focus is to advise individuals or organizations on the best course of action to achieve goals through specialized expertise (US Department of Agriculture Virtual University, n.d.). Consultants provide a diagnosis by collecting data on the organization’s problems and processes and by providing feedback (Corn, 2015). Consultants agree with the client system on the goals and strategies for achieving them (Corn, 2015). However, a coach’s primary focus is based on the client’s self-identified goals and agenda, in which the coach’s role is to strengthen the client’s wisdom, thought processes, and direct action for the future (US Department of Agriculture Virtual University, n.d.). Coaches do not diagnose client problems; they help clients discover and develop awareness that enables them to take action (The Coaches Training Institute, 2011).
Consulting is most appropriate when organizations focus on improving interpersonal relationships (Rothwell, 2015). Consultants diagnose organizational problems to establish their root causes, which are influenced by a person-centered psychology (Rothwell, 2015). On the other hand, coaching is most appropriate when individuals want to learn new skills, achieve a new goal, and make changes at work (Jovanovic, 2024). For example, coaching is beneficial when employees want to learn leadership development, such as transformational leadership (Jovanovic, 2024).
