Project description

Some of the characteristics of a good qualitative interview, are - as according to what qualitative research is - is to keep questions open ended, so that the interviewees are able to answer them using their own life experiences (Yob & Brewer, n.d.). Another characteristic is to not lead, but to listen to what the interviewees are answering when they are responding to questions that they are asked. After all, the interview is about their life experiences, and that is an important component of the research that we are engaging in. If we ask leading questions, or attempt to answer questions for them, they are not going to be very forthcoming about their answers and the interview will be ineffective (Rubin & Rubin, 2012). A good interview guide will thusly include (as I stated before) open-ended questions. These will be useful as interviewees can fully answer in their own way, and with their own information. This will not limit the interview to questions that they are asked such as 'yes or no' questions; it will allow them to tell their story. Then, the interviewer will be able to gather the information that they are looking for. It will include questions that are not trying to badger or intimidate the interviewee either; the interviewer should aim for respect and maintaining the dignity of their client, even when they are attempting to obtain information from them.
