Project description
State whether you agree or disagree with one or more of the deficits they shared and explain why.
Note: You must support your points with at least one recent (within the past 5 years) peer-reviewed article that you find using the Walden library.
State whether you agree or disagree with one or more of the disparities they shared and explain why.
Note: You must support your points with at least one recent (within the past 5 years) peer-reviewed article that you find using the library.
Note: Your responses to colleagues should be substantial (250 words minimum), supported with scholarly evidence from your research and/or the Learning Resources, and properly cited using APA Style. Personal anecdotes are acceptable as part of a meaningful response but cannot stand alone as a response. Your responses should enrich the initial post by supporting and/or adding a fresh viewpoint and be constructive, enhancing the learning experience for all students.
One major deficit is cognitive impairment, which may affect attention, concentration, memory, and reasoning abilities. Individuals experiencing severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder may struggle to process information, recall events accurately, or maintain focus during lengthy interviews. These challenges can increase the risk of misunderstandings and inconsistent statements if interviewers do not adjust their questioning techniques (Clugston et al., 2019).
Another important consideration is communication difficulties. Mental illness can affect how individuals express themselves and interpret questions. Some individuals may provide vague, disorganized, or incomplete responses, while others may have difficulty understanding complex language. Interviewers should use clear, simple questions and frequently check for understanding to reduce confusion and improve the quality of information obtained (Farrugia & Gabbert, 2020).
Psycholegal interviewers must also be aware of suggestibility and vulnerability to pressure. Individuals with serious mental health conditions may be more likely to comply with authority figures, agree with leading questions, or provide inaccurate information to end a stressful interview. Farrugia and Gabbert (2020) found that vulnerable suspects often require additional safeguards because traditional interviewing methods may increase the risk of unreliable statements.
Conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, neurological disorders, chronic pain, sleep disorders, or substance use disorders may affect cognition, mood, and communication. Additionally, medications used to treat psychiatric and physical conditions can cause fatigue, slowed thinking, memory difficulties, or impaired concentration. Interviewers must consider how both mental illness and physical health conditions may influence an individual's ability to participate effectively in the interview process (Clugston et al., 2019).
