Project description
Respond to one of your colleagues’ posts and provide additional insight as to what other opportunities your colleague might want to explore further in their research. a response
I’d be interested in examining how video mediated legal interviews affect the experiences and treatment of neurodivergent adolescents, including autistic youth and youth with ADHD. The main phenomenon of interest would be how the interview format influences suggestibility, compliance, communication, stress, and perceived credibility. The study would explore both roles: adolescents questioned as suspects and adolescents testifying as witnesses.
A qualitative approach would focus on how adolescents, attorneys, interviewers, caregivers, and other professionals understand these experiences. Researchers could use interviews, observations, and review of interview procedures to learn how video technology affects communication and decision-making. Ravitch and Carl (2021) explain that qualitative research studies meaning, context, and participants’ perspectives. Therefore, the study would not only ask whether video interviewing produces different outcomes but also examine why those outcomes may occur. Erickson (2011) notes that qualitative inquiry is useful for studying human behavior in real life social settings.
Several contextual issues could influence the research. Neurodivergent adolescents may experience sensory discomfort, difficulty reading facial expressions, anxiety, communication differences, or pressure to agree with authority figures. The interviewer’s tone is significant, the quality of the video connection, access to supportive devices or perhaps individuals, and the youth’s understanding of legal rights may also affect responses. The study could take place in juvenile courts, police interview rooms, child advocacy centers, correctional facilities, transitional housing facilities or remote court settings. I'm open to other location ideas that you all may have.
