Project description
For this discussion, I selected Video #4 Christin Topper’s (2014) Bringing the Natural World to Hong Kong video. After reviewing my observational field notes and the transcript, I identified two initial codes: connecting children with nature and social change through education.
The first code, connecting children with nature, stood out because Topper discusses using school gardens and green spaces to give children more opportunities to interact with the natural environment. My field notes also focused on the students’ involvement and how the garden created a more hands-on experience with nature. Personally, this part of the video stood out to me because I believe that meaningful experiences can have a lasting impact on how people understand the world around them. Seeing students actively participate rather than simply learning about nature from a classroom or textbook made the connection feel more meaningful to me.
The second code, social change through education, reflects the broader purpose of Topper’s work. Her project goes beyond creating a garden because she is using education and student participation to address what she describes as “nature deficit disorder.” This stood out to me because it shows how a relatively small project can be connected to a larger goal of creating change within a community. I can personally relate to this idea because it reminds me that change does not always have to begin with a large-scale effort. Sometimes, helping individuals develop new experiences, perspectives, or awareness can be the beginning of a much larger change.
As I began coding the transcript and my observational notes, I realized that coding is more than identifying words or topics that appear repeatedly. It requires me to look for meaning and connections within the data. This is especially meaningful to me as I think about my own research interests because I want to understand people's experiences and the meaning they make from those experiences. This exercise helped me see how careful observation and coding can move a researcher from simply describing what happened to identifying patterns that may help answer a research question. Respond to one of your colleagues’ posts and explain how your colleague’s codes are similar to or different from yours.
