There are important differences to take into consideration when looking at quantitative versus qualitative research questions. First and foremost, there is a difference in the types of data that are collected in each category. In quantitative data, the researcher is looking to identify relationships based upon associations (Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022). It is more numerical. For instance, when looking directly at quantitative research questions, these lines of questioning are framed in order to provide descriptions, compare variables, or determine a relationship between variables (Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022). For instance, an example of this type of research questioning can be found in a dissertation written by Mann (2020). In this dissertation, Mann asks several research questions and follows them with hypotheses that he is looking to determine through the research. One of the questions posed in the research is “What is the relationship between officer gender and EDR?” (Mann, 2022). This research question makes it clear that the research conducted is quantitative in nature, since it is looking to identify a relationship between two variables.
In contrast, qualitative research questions looks at a variety of factors that could be influencing a variety of subsets including evaluation of research or describing the causes of things such as phenomena, conditions, or contributing to existing literature (Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022). It is a more descriptive type of measure and line of questioning rather than a numerical analysis. The dissertation produced by Mills (2022) provides a clear example of qualitative research questioning. In her dissertation, she asks, “How do mental health care providers in Washington State perceive psychiatric Death with Dignity for treatment resistant, severely mentally ill prisoners?” (Mills, 2022). This question focuses on the perception of the mental health care providers on a specific population and policy. It is not looking at a relationship but rather looking at factors that can ultimately influence future research, development, and policy. Response..
