Project description

First, leading questions are problematic because they can influence an interviewee’s responses rather than allowing individuals to describe their experiences in their own words. When interviewers imply a “correct” answer or introduce information that has not been offered, the accuracy and reliability of the data can be compromised. This concern is especially relevant when working with vulnerable populations, such as children or individuals involved in behavioral health, legal, or child welfare systems, where there may already be pressure to comply. Interview practices that rely on suggestion or coercion increase the risk of distorted or unreliable information, reinforcing the importance of neutral, non‑directive questioning (Banevičienė, 2023). In addition, interviewers should avoid using an overly authoritative, confrontational, or judgmental tone. These approaches can create fear, resistance, or emotional withdrawal, particularly for individuals with trauma histories or negative experiences with authority. When interviewees feel judged or accused, they may become guarded, disengaged, or provide responses intended to protect themselves rather than reflect their true experiences. Effective interviewing therefore requires professionalism, emotional regulation, and the creation of a respectful environment where individuals feel safe to communicate openly. Power imbalance is another critical factor in interviews, as the interviewer often holds authority, controls the process, and may influence outcomes. This dynamic is especially pronounced in contexts involving children, service recipients, or individuals within legal systems. When interviewees perceive the interviewer as having control over decisions that affect them, they may respond out of fear, compliance, or a desire to satisfy expectations rather than provide accurate information. Differences in positionality and authority can heighten vulnerability for marginalized individuals, increasing the likelihood of constrained or altered responses (Kim, 2024). A related factor is emotional, developmental, or cognitive vulnerability. Individuals may struggle due to trauma, stress, anxiety, age, or difficulty processing information under pressure. For example, children or emotionally distressed adults may have trouble understanding questions or organizing their thoughts. If interviewers do not adjust their approach to account for these factors, the process may unintentionally disadvantage the interviewee and lead to incomplete or misleading information. Overall, this highlights the importance of maintaining a neutral, patient, and person‑centered approach so individuals can respond honestly without feeling pressured toward a particular outcome. In my view, these considerations reinforce the ethical responsibility of interviewers to prioritize neutrality and respect in all interactions. Respond too due 5/30
