Project description

Research questions (RQs) are an important component of research because they provide direction and guide the research process. According to Nikitidis and Theodoratou (2025), a clearly formulated research question is essential to a research study's success because it helps establish research objectives, select appropriate methodologies, analyze data, and interpret findings. When a research question is poorly formulated, even rigorous research methods and sound reasoning may fail to produce meaningful or valid conclusions because the study is compromised at its foundation. Research questions also differ from ordinary questions. Andrews (2003) explained that research questions are intended to generate answers through systematic investigation rather than simply receiving a response. Research questions can take different forms depending on the study’s purpose and design. OASIS (n.d.) identifies several types of research questions, including why, when, who, how, and where. These question types help researchers clarify what they are studying, understand the research context, and determine how far findings may be generalized (OASIS, n.d.). A research question is suitable for a particular study when it aligns with the study’s purpose and research design. For qualitative studies, research questions are typically open-ended and use “what” or “how” to explore a phenomenon, experience, or process. Quantitative research questions focus on measurable variables and may examine relationships between variables or differences among groups. In mixed-methods research, the questions should incorporate both qualitative and quantitative approaches and indicate how the two approaches will be integrated. Research questions should also clearly identify the participants and research setting and remain consistent with the study’s overall purpose and objectives (OASIS, n.d.). Therefore, a suitable research question should be clear, focused, answerable, and appropriate for the methodology being used. Ask clarifying questions, expand on a point made by your peer, or suggest additional determinants of suitability. In addition, be sure to respond to all Instructor queries. You are encouraged to engage in this Discussion early and often throughout this 2-week module.
