Project description
ost your explanation of the characteristics of a good qualitative interview. Also include what makes a good interview guide. Use the interview questions from Yob and Brewer’s interview guide to support your post.
Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.
A good qualitative interview is a purposeful, flexible conversation that encourages participants to explain their experiences in their own words. Rubin and Rubin (2012) emphasize conversational partnerships grounded in trust, respect, and attentive listening. Interviewers should ask clear, nonjudgmental questions, allow time for reflection, and use probes and follow up questions to clarify meanings and explore unexpected ideas.
A good interview guide balances structure with flexibility. It includes open ended main questions aligned with the research purpose, potential probes, and logical progression from introductory topics to deeper reflection. Main questions establish the focus, probes encourage detail and follow up questions explore ideas emerging from participants’ responses (Rubin & Rubin, 2012).
Yob and Brewer’s (n.d.) guide demonstrates this approach by asking, “From your perspective, what is social change?” followed by, “From your own observations, can you give some examples of what you mean?” (Appendix A). These questions allow participants to define social change themselves and connect their understanding to concrete experiences, supporting Rubin and Rubin’s (2012) emphasis on meaning and detail. Questions about participants’ backgrounds and professional roles align with the study’s purpose.
Some questions could be more open-ended. Yes or no questions about institutional choice should invite explanation, while asking whether social change removes something negative or nurtures something positive may limit responses. Asking participants to describe the changes they seek would encourage broader accounts and reduce assumptions.
