Project description
Identify at least two deficit characteristics associated with their disorder, which interviewers need to account for when interviewing the identified population.
For each deficit, describe at least two potential consequences if the deficit characteristics are not taken into consideration during the interviewing process.
David Murphy's (2018) "Interviewing Individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder in Forensic Settings" article highlighted that individuals with ASD experience a complex range of social communication difficulties, cognitive style differences, sensory issues, and challenges with emotional regulation that can affect how they present and engage during forensic interviews because these challenges can make it difficult to accurately recall events and engage in reciprocal, meaningful dialogue during investigative interviews. Individuals with ASD can also be diagnosed with other conditions such as ADHD, personality disorders, and intellectual disabilities that can further complicate the assessment and interviewing processes (Murphy, 2018).
Your responses to colleagues should be substantial (250 words minimum), supported with scholarly evidence from your research and/or the Learning Resources, and properly cited using APA Style. Personal anecdotes are acceptable as part of a meaningful response but cannot stand alone as a response. Your responses should enrich the initial post by supporting and/or adding a fresh viewpoint and be constructive, enhancing the learning experience for all students.
Key findings of the article include the importance of minimizing distractions and modifying interview settings and protocols to accommodate sensory issues (Murphy, 2018).
Communication should be clear, concrete, literal, and free from metaphors, sarcasm, or ambiguous language. Interviews may need to be structured with explicit rules on turn-taking and timing and allow more time for processing and responses. Using assistive tools like writing or digital devices can facilitate communication for those with verbal difficulties. Additionally, assessing the individual's cognitive style and psychiatric comorbidities in advance can improve the effectiveness and safety precautions of the forensic interview.
